Scottish Opera was founded in 1962 by Sir Alexander Gibson, and has built a considerable reputation for its distinguished productions. It is based in Glasgow and performs at the Theatre Royal, but takes its productions to all of Scotland's major theatres, as well as small touring productions to smaller halls and theatres from the Borders to Shetland. Its current musical director is Francesco Corti. A large number of distinguished singers and musicians have graced the Scottish Opera stage in the past, including Dame Janet Baker and the late Sir Charles Mackerras.
The company has a very active Education Department that is committed to bringing the widest range of opera, to the maximum audience in Scotland and the United Kingdom, and it is committed to delivering socially inclusive outreach and educational productions. They also have an Emerging Artists scheme, in conjunction with the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, giving young singers further training and performance opportunities on graduation.
Over the past 20 years Scottish Opera has won a host of illustrious awards, including the Barclays TMA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera for Macbeth and Der Rosenkavalier (both in 1994) and for Die Walküre and Siegfried (both in 2002), as well as the South Bank Show Award for "Best Opera" for the Ring Cycle (2004). They have also staged foreign tours to Italy, Germany, Austria, Portugal, France, Switzerland, Yugoslavia and Iceland.
