The Grand Hall of the City Halls is renowned throughout the world for having the finest acoustics. Dating from 1841 and reopened after extensive refurbishment in 2006, it is the city's oldest, but most well loved, purpose built performance and meeting space. This exciting music complex also houses top class rehearsal, recording, broadcasting and webcasting facilities. As a hub of creativity, a jam-packed programme of public workshops and classes has already benefited everyone from babies, toddlers and school groups to amateur and professional musicians. It is the home of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and its new world-renowned conductor Donald Runnicles, and is the Glasgow base of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Many famous names have appeared here over the years, including Charles Dickens, Benjamin Disraeli, Alfred Brendel, Sir Charles Mackerras, Billy Connolly and Dr. David Livingstone. The City Halls is also home to the Scottish Music Centre.
