Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou are a national institution in their homeland of Benin and the group’s own brand of homemade voodoo funk is sure to bring alive the atmospheric Old Fruitmarket, much like at past Celtic Connections performances from fellow African music stars Angélique Kidjo and Cheikh Lô.

Western audiences have only recently discovered the group’s breathtaking sound which has led to many high profile concerts at venues such as New York’s Lincoln Centre and the Barbican in London. This Tuesday will be their Scottish live debut and we’re delighted to reveal that joining us on the evening is Franz Ferdinand drummer (and Poly-Rythmo collaborator) Paul Thomson who will perform a DJ set before and after Poly-Rythmo’s performance.

“When funk becomes hypnotic like this, it’s unstoppable music” New York Times

“We have become big fans of this Benin band. They have a completely unique sound, so funky, so soul and voodoo!” Nick McCarthy, guitarist, Franz Ferdinand

”…their presentation and tightness were a marvel and their trumpeter could have his pick of jazz bands” The Herald

For the chance to win a pair of tickets email info@glasgowcityofmusic.com by 1pm tomorrow (28th June 2011). Good luck!
