BEN FROST PERFORMS BY THE THROAT

Posted: Wednesday 10 October 2012

Ben FrostThroughout the next two years this new programme will bring artists of as high a calibre as renowned sound artist Scanner (Robin Rimbaud)  and visionary London based audio-visual organisation Touch to Glasgow.  Some of the world’s leading innovators for concerts, installations and workshops and inspirational encounters of many kinds will be encouraging Glasgow to vibrate to the sound of sub bass.

On Wednesday 24th October Ben Frost will be performing his highly acclaimed 2009 recording By the Throat live to audiences in the Old Fruitmarket, Candleriggs. The music of Ben Frost is all about contrast. It is influenced as much by Classical Minimalism as it is by Punk Rock and Metals. Frost’s guitar-based textures emerge from nothing and slowly coalesce in huge, forbidding forms that often eschew conventional structures in favour of the inevitable unfolding of vast mechanical systems.

As can be heard on Frost’s albums Steel Wound and Theory of Machines his music is more than a cerebral exercise and has an undeniable visceral presence, which is felt as much as heard. His compositions are created with an acute awareness of the listener and their comfort thresholds, exploiting every extreme of pitch and volume. His notorious building-shaking performances at international festivals including Mantreal’s MUTEK combine amplified electronics with furious thrashing of live guitars. Frost himself has been described as one of the most interesting and groundbreaking producers in the world today. His music’s intense physicality has filled gallery spaces and driven contemporary dance productions by Chunky Move, the Icelandic Dance Company and the acclaimed Erna Ómarsdottír and Wayne McGregor.
