The workshop covers the fundamentals of taiko drumming, beginning with the stance and grip and gradually progressing step-by-step over the course of the weekend. By the end of the two days participants will be able to play a short piece from the west coast of Japan.
The workshop will be taught by senior members of Mugenkyo at their base in the South Lanarkshire countryside: the Mugen Taiko Dojo, UK’s only purpose-built taiko centre. Throughout most of the year the Dojo serves as the base & rehearsal space for Mugenkyo and is opened especially to visitors for workshops at certain times of year, providing a unique opportunity to meet & learn directly from members of Mugenkyo.
The rhythm will be taught in the traditional way – verbally, so don’t worry if you can’t read music. The workshop is suitable for anyone aged 16 and over and of any level of fitness, whether you’re an experienced drummer or have never held a pair of drumsticks before; all are welcome. These are primarily hands-on workshops, but will also provide the opportunity to learn about the background of taiko: through demonstrations, explanations & video clips. The workshop offers a unique opportunity to learn to play a taiko piece on these beautiful instruments, and a fascinating insight into the world of taiko drumming.
