Scottish Chamber Orchestra: Britten 100

Benjamin Britten's centenary is celebrated with a program that goes back into the past: Harrison Birtwistle's Carmen arcadiae mechanicae perpetuum and Martin Suckling's storm, rose, tiger are both associated with the Aldeburgh Festival that Britten started, and the final piece is Mozart's powerful Symphony No 40. At the heart of the programme is one of Britten's greatest masterpieces: the haunting Serenade for tenor, horn and strings, a song cycle that delves into the world of night and sleep with rare and terrifying effectiveness. John Mark Ainsley sings and Alec Frank-Gemmill takes the justly famous horn part; George Benjamin conducts.
